Celebrate Estuaries Day at York River State Park
Hike, paddle and interact with exhibitors

WILLIAMSBURG, VA—York River State Park is known for its rare and delicate estuarine environment and on Sept. 23, guests are invited to celebrate this unique space in honor of the park’s annual Estuaries Day event.

York River is unique because it is located where freshwater and saltwater meet, and this creates a rich habitat for marine and plant life. It is on the York River and is designated as a Chesapeake Bay National Estuarine Research Reserve.

“We have more than 40 miles of trails that allow visitors to explore the marsh, river shoreline and forests,” said York River State Park Manager Charlie Whalen. “This event is a celebration to create awareness of estuaries and to encourage more people to help protect these significant natural resources.”

The event runs from 12 p.m. until 4 p.m. and will include exhibits from various agencies and organizations highlighting the park’s unique ecosystem. Staff and volunteers will lead hiking and paddling excursions.  Self-guided adventurers are also welcome to discover the beauty in the brackish water world. 

“Estuaries Day is the perfect way to connect with our visitors and help them connect with the beauty of life where the rivers meet the sea,” said York River State Park Education Specialist John Gresham.

Programs, activities, and visitor center displays focus on the history, use, wildlife and preservation of the York River and its marshes.
